Women's Basketball Routs Mt. Holyoke, 75-57

DUDLEY, Mass.- Three players scored in double figures as the Nichols women's basketball team earned a 75-57 victory over Mount Holyoke on Tuesday evening in non-conference action. The Bison were up by as many as 27 points in the second half as senior Kristina Weasel (Wakefield, R.I.) and sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) each posted 12 points. Sophomore Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) added ten while junior MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) tied her own school record with ten steals to go along with nine assists. Nichols moves to 4-2 on the year while the Lyons fall to 1-6.

 

Both teams shot the ball well in the first half but 17 turnovers plagued Mount Holyoke as Nichols headed into the locker room with a ten point lead, 39-29. Weasel led the Bison with nine first half points off 3-6 shooting, including 2-2 from behind the arc. Lilly chipped in with eight points off 4-6 shooting while Skarzenski posted six steals and dished out five assists. The Bison got 14 points off the Lyons 17 turnovers. Sophomore Jessica Olson (Gilbert, Ariz.) led Mount Holyoke with 11 points and six rebounds at the half.

 

The second half was all Nichols as they stormed ahead by as many as 27 points despite 50 percent shooting by the Lyons. The Bison maintained better ball control as Mount Holyoke finished with 30 turnovers while Nichols committed a season-low 13.

 

Olson was held to four second half points as she finished with 15 for the Lyons along with a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Marisa Barone (Ludlow, Mass.) finished with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds.

 

Sophomore Lyndsey Bennett (North Brookfield, Mass.) chipped in with nine points for the Bison, who continue action this Thursday at Keene State.
