POMFRET, Conn.- The Nichols men's hockey team opened up the home portion of its 2007-08 schedule with a 6-1 victory over Assumption at Jahn Rink in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Bison, now 3-0 on the young season, out-shot the Greyhounds 53-13 on the night. Junior Anthony Monte (Chicago, IL) led Nichols with a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and two assists while junior Ryan Gervais (Chicago, IL) added two goals and one assist.
Junior Glenn Cacaro (Sioux Falls, SD) gave the Bison a quick 1-0 lead just 1:04 into the game with his first goal of the season. Freshmen John Haley (Shelbourne, VT) and Will Munson (Corona, CA) earned the assists. Nichols starting frontline connected on the team's next two games, including Monte's game-winner at the 9:45 mark. Gervais and sophomore Zeke Costello (Shelby Township, MI) picked up the assists on that play while Gervais netted his first goal of the game with 2:35 left in the first from Monte and Costello. Haley gave Nichols a big 4-0 lead heading into the first intermission as he scored his second goal of the season just 22 seconds after Gervais' goal.
Assumption was able to quit the Nichols offense in the second, despite being out-shot 15-4. Senior John Routhier (Saugus, MA) scored the lone power play goal of the game midway through the second to make it a 4-1 contest but that proved to be the only goal the Greyhounds were able to get past sophomore goalie Donny Wynia (Minneapolis, MN). Wynia recorded 12 saves to improve to 2-0.
Monte and Gervais added two more goals in the final period to cap things off. Costello assisted on Gervais' goal to close out the night with three assists. Junior Cole Ruwe (Pekin, IL) also posted a pair of assists for the Bison while Cacaro finished with one goal and two assists.
Assumption's Jamie DiGiulio (Peabody, MA) recorded 14 saves before being relieved by junior David Pinkham (Malden, MA), who posted 26 total saves in the second and third periods.
