Bison Out-Done By Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass.-
Junior guard Dave Jaehnig (Quincy) led a balanced attack with 14 points and nine rebounds as Westfield State cruised to an 85-54 non-conference victory over Nichols College on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
The Owls evened their record at 2-2 while the Bison dropped to 0-3.

Westfield shot well, played tough defense, and received significant contributions from numerous players. The Owls had four players score in double figures, and seven players with eight or more points, as they finally pulled away from the outmanned Bison in the second half.

Westfield's led 40-21 with 4:37 remaining in the first half, but it was outscored 11-2 in the final 3 1/2 minutes for a 42-32 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Owls led 52-40 then went on a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a commanding 69-42 lead with 7:14 remaining.

Also scoring in double figures were sophomore guard Brandon Mauer (Pittsfield) with 13 points, and junior guard Mark Edmonds (Albany, N.Y.) and freshman Vinny Baker (Springfield) with 12 points apiece. Baker - a 6-0 guard from Commerce High School - had a ferocious dunk with 6:11 remaining in the game.

Senior guard Ryan Mauer (Pittsfield) tallied nine points, and sophomore forward Drew Pereira (Seekonk) and junior point guard Chris Kinback (Shrewsbury) had eight points apiece. Kinback also posted a game-high seven assists.

The Owls shot 50 percent from the field (7 for 16 from 3-point range) and were 20-for-25 from the foul line.

Freshman guard Garrett Bishop (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was the only Nichols player in double figures with a game-high 20 points. The Bison shot 38 percent from the field were outrebounded, 43-28.
