POMFRET, Conn.- Five different players scored to lead the Nichols men's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Salve Regina in the team's ECAC Northeast opener on Tuesday at Jahn Rink. The Bison remain undefeated with a 5-0-1 overall record while the Seahawks fall to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Junior Matt Broadhead (Palatine, IL) scored 2:22 into the match as the Bison never trailed. Freshman Will Munson (Corona, CA) added another goal on a power play at the 8:19 mark to give Nichols a 2-0 lead but Salve Regina countered with its first goal of the game 17 seconds later. Junior Jake Pickard (Wellfleet, MA) scored the goal for the Seahawks, his second of the season.
Nichols took a 3-1 lead midway through the second stanza as junior Jeff Bieber (Littleton, CO) tallied his first goal of the year. Freshman Ryan Peterson (Shrewsbury, NJ) then made it a two goal game with his unassisted goal with 3:11 into the third period. The Bison quickly regained their three goal lead when freshman Billy Sabia (Ridgefield, CT) netted his first collegiate goal just over a minute later.
Needing to score three goals to get even with Nichols, Salve pulled its goalie with just over three minutes remaining. Freshman John Haley (Shelbourne, VT) took advantage of the empty net, scoring his fifth goal of the season with one minute left for the 5-2 final.
Nichols will return to action on Saturday when it will face Colby in the Bowdoin/Colby Classic at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Bison will take on Bowdoin at 2 p.m. Salve Regina will play Southern Maine as part of the Skidmore Invitational on Saturday at 5 p.m.
