DUDLEY, Mass.- Junior MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) and freshman Michele Guerin (Chicopee, Mass.) each scored in double figures to lead the Nichols women's basketball team past Connecticut College, 66-55, on Tuesday. Skarzenski posted 12 points to go along with six rebounds, seven assists and five steals while Guerin chipped in with a team-high 14 points off the bench and five rebounds. The loss was the Camels first of the year as they drop to 2-1 while the Bison improve to 2-1.
Neither team was able to grab more than a three point lead through the majority of the first half before the Bison pulled together a 13-6 drive to take an eight point lead, 29-21, with 2:54 left until halftime. Back-to-back layups by Skarzenski and freshman Ashley Robidoux (Mildford, Mass.) off steals closed out the drive. The Camels scored six straight points, however, to knock the lead back down to two before Guerin hit a last second jumper in the corner to end the half, 31-27.
Connecticut senior Katy Serafin (Carmel, N.Y.) led all scorers in the first half with ten points and eight rebounds along with four steals. Guerin had a team-high seven points for the Bison.
Nichols was able to extend its lead back out to eight early in the second half. The Camels threatened, eventually tying the game at 40-40 with 9:33 left but Skarzenski and Guerin took over, scoring 12 of the team's last 19 points.
Serafin finished with a game-high 21 points off 6-12 shooting and 14 rebounds. Senior Lindsay Michel (West Haven, Conn.) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds. Freshman Cindy Roseen (Wolfeboro, N.H.) pulled down 12 rebounds for the Camels as well.
Sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) had six points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Bison. Sophomore Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) contributed nine points and eight rebounds. Freshman Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.) posted eight points and four rebounds in her collegiate debut.
The Bison will return to action on Tuesday when they will host Fitchburg State at 7 p.m. while the Camels will host Clark University.
