Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass.- The Nichols College field hockey team had its record-breaking season come to a close on Saturday as it fell to Bridgewater State, 1-0, in the ECAC Semifinals. The Bison finish the year 16-7 overall, a program record. After battling to a scoreless tie by halftime, the Bears' Katie Balboni scored the game-winning goal 1:08 into the second half. Nichols out-shot Bridgewater State 11-8 on the day but could not find the back of the cage as it was held scoreless for the first time all season.
The Bears will host tomorrow's championship game as the win improved them to 15-6 on the season. Sophomore MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) recorded five saves in the loss for Nichols while Nicole Downs stopped all seven of Nichols' attempts.
Nichols broke several team and individual records this season, including wins and shutouts, The Bison also shattered the previous goals record with 92 in 2007 compared to 59 in 1984. Sophomore Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.) had a record 22 goals and 52 points while freshman MaryKate Frodema (Springfield, Mass.) tallied 13 assists, also a program record.
