Dudley, Mass.- The Nichols men's soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit, defeating Eastern Nazarene, 2-1, in TCCC action on Wednesday. The win ends a six game losing streak for the Bison, who are now 4-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference. The Crusaders remain winless at 0-14-0 overall and 0-8-0 in TCCC play.
Senior Brad Leonard (Vinton, Va.) gave ENC an early 1-0 lead when his shot into the opposite corner of the net got past sophomore keeper Clayton Johnson (Williamstown, Mass.). Senior Jesse Mix (North East, Pa.) earned the assist as he set-up Leonard perfectly with his lead pass from the flank.
Nichols turned it on in the second half, tying the game at the 53:40 mark. Freshman Michael Schell (South Windsor, Conn.) scored his second goal in as many games off a thru pass from senior Scott Thomas Gruner (Torrington, Conn.). Gruner went on to score the game-winning goal for the Bison 13 minutes later with a blast over ENC keeper Andrew Trice's (Quincy, Mass.) head. Sophomore Timothy Mann (Marshfield, Mass.) picked up the assist with his pass from midfield on the play.
The Crusaders had their opportunities to tie the game late, including a shot by Leonard that hit the crossbar with seven minutes remaining, but could not get the equalizer. Johnson finished the game with two saves for Nichols while Trice recorded seven saves in the loss.
Nichols will continue TCCC action on Thursday at Western New England College while ENC will host Gordon.
