Field Hockey Advances to TCCC Semifinals with 1-0 Double Overtime Win at UNE

Biddeford, ME- The Nichols field hockey team has advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals with a 1-0 double overtime victory at the University of New England in today's quarterfinals match. With the win, the Bison have  set a new school record for wins as they are now 14-5 overall. They also have set a new record for shutouts in a season with eight. Sophomore Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 5:45 left in the second overtime. Nichols will move on to face #1 seeded Gordon on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Nichols dominated play throughout the entire game but could not get one past UNE goalie Ayla Nelson, who finished with 21 saves. Sophomore Mary Kate Bednarz (Springfield, MA) recorded four saves in her eighth shutout of the year, also a new Nichols record for individual goalkeepers.

Overall, the Bison outshot the Nor'easters 30-12 and were awarded 13 penalty corners to UNE's four. Freshman TCCC Rookie of the Year Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.) led Nichols with 11 shots.

Nichols battled Gordon into overtime in its regular season match-up with the Fighting Scots scoring the golden goal with 1:14 left in the first overtime period. Last season, the Bison upset Gordon in the TCCC Quarterfinals, 3-2, as Bailey scored the game-winning goal in that match as well.
