NEW LONDON, N.H. –The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team won two of three doubles contests and all three singles matches played on their way to a 5-1 victory over Nichols College in the opening round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference tennis tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Led by Colby-Sawyer All-Conference honorees Jen LaChance (Killingworth, Conn.) and Hannah White (Stockbridge, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles, the tandem fought back from a 7-6 deficit to take the victory 9-7 in a tiebreak against junior Jessica Porter (Melrose, Mass.) and sophomore Molly McGuire (Sandwich, Mass.). At No. 2 doubles Brittany Mailman (Freedom, N.H.) and Mary Francis (Steuben, Maine), also All-Conference honorees, made quick work of the Bison, winning 8-1 over freshman Emily Levine (Providence, R.I.) and senior Kat Bishop (Fitchburg, Mass.).
Nichols picked up their only win of the day at No. 3 doubles, where freshmen Kelsey Urbanetti (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Chelsey Cutting (Holyoke, Mass.) defeated the Colby-Sawyer tandem of Kate Lucas (Manchester, Mass.) and Lauren DeFelice (Sandy Hook, Conn.), 8-6.
In singles action, the Chargers took a commanding lead in all six games, but as the Chargers clinched their fifth point, play was suspended. Recording the official victories for the Chargers were White, Olivia Ellis (Jericho, Vt.) and Carolyn Drake (Great River, N.Y.).
The No. 2 seeded Colby-Sawyer (13-3) will next be in action on Wednesday, October 24 when they will travel to Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. for a semifinal match with the No. 2 seeded Gulls at 2 p.m.
Earlier this season, the Gulls handed the Chargers a 6-3 loss, one of only two conference losses the Chargers suffered in the 2007 season.
