Football Tops Salve Regina, 21-14

Box Score Freshman running back Anthony Pillari (Westwood, NJ) ran for 112 yards as Nichols College edged out Salve Regina, 21-14, on Saturday in NEFC Boyd Division action. The win lifts the Bison to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Boyd play while the Seahawks fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the division. Senior quarterback Michael Carven (Hanover, MA) ran in the winning touchdown from one yard out midway through the final quarter following a 37 yard completion to sophomore Joshua Harris (Northbridge, MA).

Nichols got on the board early in the second quarter when Carven threw for his first of two touchdown passes on the day. Carven found freshman Roland Gervais (Griswold, CT) from eight yards out, capping off a nine play, 72 yard drive. Freshman Kyle Gilson (East Waterboro, ME) missed the extra point, keeping it a 6-0 ball game.

With 27 seconds left until halftime, Carven connected with Harris for a 27 yard touchdown to send the Bison into the locker room with a 13-0 advantage. Freshman Vinny Cromartie (Cranston, RI), playing in his home state of Rhode Island, made two key interceptions, including one at the three yard line, to keep the Seahawks off the board in the first half.

Salve Regina fought its way back in the second half as quarterback Scott Peters threw for two touchdown passes. Andrew Monaco made good on both point after attempts, giving the Seahawks a 14-13 lead.

On the ensuing drive, Pillari pounded his way down field, running for a total of 18 yards, including five on a crucial third and two play. The Bison made it to Salve's six yard line when Carven connected with Harris for 37 yards. Pillari was taken down just shy of the end zone on the next play but Carven was able to cross the line on the next play, giving the Bison a 19-14 lead. Nichols went for the two point conversion as Carven's pass to Harris was good for the 21-14 final.

Carven threw for 120 yards on 9-20 attempts and ran for another 61 yards. Harris caught three passes for a total of 72 yards. Pillari averaged 3.7 yards on 30 carries and added two kick-off returns for 46 yards, including a long of 25.

Senior Bryan Meuse (Billerica, MA) led the Bison with eight tackles while senior Rob McDonagh (Dorcester, MA) tallied three tackles for a loss of 17 yards along with a sack. Cromartie made five tackles and had one pass break-up in addition to his two interceptions.

The Bison will play Plymouth State for Homecoming Weekend at Nichols next Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.
