DUDLEY, Mass.- In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Week, Nichols' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organized a fundraiser to help a local Charlton woman who is battling breast cancer.
SAAC members spent their nights last week in their dorm rooms making handcrafted pink Swarovski® Crystal bracelets with breast cancer charms. SAAC raised $500 by selling 50 bracelets.
In addition, the athletics department donated all of its ticket proceeds ($400) from its home athletic contests on Saturday, Feb. 16. Nichols' game day staff and coaches wore pink at the games as well, including equipment manager Bates Craver, who painted his famous brown moccasins pink.
The money raised is being donated to Monica Nelson, a young single mother from Charlton, Mass. who teaches second grade in Spencer, Mass. She has recently undergone a double mastectomy and is currently going through radiation chemotherapy. SAAC plans to present the check for $900 to Nelson at a Nichols women's basketball's playoff game this coming week.
